Du möchtest schnellen und zuverlässigen Zugang zum Wohnheimnetz und zum Internet?

Mit einem ganz normalen Netzwerkkabel kannst du 1000 MBit/s (~125 MB/s) nutzen.

Wir arbeiten daran in 2023 den meisten unserer Mitglieder 2500 MBit/s (~310 MB/s) über LAN zur verfügung stellen zu können.

Verbinde einfach deinen Computer mit Hilfe eines Netzwerkkabels mit der Netzwerkdose. Eine Netzwerkdose gibt es in allen Zimmern!

Achtung: In manchen Wohnheimzimmern sind Doppeldosen angebracht. Nur eine davon funktioniert. Wenn der Anschluss nicht funktioniert einfach den anderen Anschluss verwenden.

Do you want fast and highly reliable access to the dormitory network and the Internet?

With a standard network cable you can use a speed up to a 1000 MBit/s (~100 MB/s).

We are working to provide 2500 Mbps (~310 MB/s) over LAN to most of our members in 2023.
Simply connect your computer to the network outlet using a standard network cable. A network outlet is present in all rooms!

Attention: In some dormitories there are "double" network outlets. Only one connection is working. Just use the other if the first one is not working.

Was für ein Netzwerkkabel benötige ich?

  • Ein ganz normales (Kupfer) Netzwerkkabel nach Cat. 5e oder Cat. 6 mit RJ-45 Steckern auf beiden Seiten reicht völlig aus.
  • Wenn ihr ein qualitativ gutes Kabel wollt einfach darauf achten, dass das Kabel entsprechend S/FTP abgeschirmt ist. Auf wenige Meter zwischen der Netzwerdose und eurem Computer sollte eine schlechte Schirmung aber theoretisch keine Auswirkung haben.

What kind of network cable do I need?

  • A simple (copper) network cable Cat. 5e or Cat. 6 with RJ45 plugs should suffice.
  • If you want a quality cable just look for Cat. 6 and proper S/FTP shielding. For those few meters between your computer and the network outlet it should not make a big difference anyway if the cable is not properly shielded, anyway.

Wieviel Geld gibt man sinnvollerweise für so ein Netzwerkkabel aus?

  • Man bekommt für 1 bis 2 Euro pro Meter schon ein ordentliches (Cat. 6) und abgeschirmtes (S/FTP) Netzwerkkabel.
  • Wenn ihr also ein 2 Meter langes, ungeschirmtes (UTP) Kabel für 20 Euro gekauft habt war das vermutlich zu teuer.

How much money should I reasonably invest on a network cable?

  • You can get a reasonably good (Cat. 6) and shielded (S/FTP) network cable for 1 to 2 Euro per metre.
  • If you paid 20 Euro for a 2 meter cable that is not even shielded (UTP) you probably paid too much.

Mein Gerät hat aber keinen Anschluss für ein Netzwerkkabel. Was soll ich tun?

  • Es gibt USB/Thunderbolt/... zu Ethernet Adapter die du kaufen kannst. Achte darauf, dass der Adapter auch Gigabit und USB 3.0 kann.
  • Tipp: In Zukunft beim Kaufen von Laptops darauf achten, dass diese Basisfunktionalität unterstützt wird.

My device does not have a connector for a network cable. What should I do?

  • There are USB/Thunderbolt/... to Ethernet adapters that you can buy. Make sure the adapter is capable of gigabit and USB 3.0.
  • Tip: For your next laptop check if it supports this basic functionality before you buy.

Was ist ein Zimmernetz?

  • Sobald wir über deinen (Unter-) Mietvertrag überprüft haben, dass du in dem Zimmer juristisch für den Anschluss verantwortlich bist, erstellen wir ein individuelles Zimmernetz (analog zum Mietvertrag).
  • Von da an bist du juristisch dafür verantwortlich, was du an deiner Netzwerkdose anschließt bzw. was du damit tust.
  • Deshalb besagt die Nutzungsordnung für das Wohnheimnetzwerk (§3 Satz 1) auch, dass du deinen Zugang zum Wohnheimnetzwerk mit niemandem teilen darfst.
  • Wenn du dein Zimmer untervermietest, solltest du deinen kabelgebunden Netzwerkzugang sperren. Das geht entweder, indem du uns das sagst (z.B. per E-Mail support@selfnet.de), oder du trägst es über das MySelfnet selbst ein. Über das MySelfnet kannst du dann auch z.B. eine ruhende Mitgliedschaft beantragen.
  • Ein Untermieter bzw. eine Untermieterin kann Mitglied werden und uns dann den Untermietvertrag zeigen.

What is a room network?

  • As soon as we checked your (sub-) rental agreement we create an individual room network (according to the rental agreement). After that the network outlet in your room should work.
  • You are legally responsible for what you do or connect to the network outlet.
  • This is why the network rules for the dormitory network prohibits sharing of the connection with anyone else (§3 1st sentence).
  • If you sublease/subrent your room you should block your cable network connection either by telling us (e.g.: by email via support@selfnet.de or during an office hour). You can also block your connection yourself by using MySelfnet. That way (by using MySelfnet) you can also apply for a resting membership if you want to do that.
  • A subtenant can then become a member him/herself and show us his/her own subrental agreement.

Ich möchte aber mehr als ein Gerät anschließen. Wie geht das?

  • Dazu kannst du einen einfachen Switch oder deinen eigenen Router nutzen.
  • Einen Switch kann man mit der Netzwerkdose verbinden und kann dann einfach mehrere Geräte mit dem Switch verbinden.
  • Ein Router muss entsprechend eingestellt sein - eine Anleitung (Router HowTo) findest du auf unserer Webseite bei den Anleitungen.
  • Wenn du Hilfe benötigst kannst du gerne in eine unserer Sprechstunden kommen (sinnvollerweise mit Router, Laptop, ...). Wir werden versuchen dir so gut wie möglich zu helfen. Bei technischen Problemen solltest du am besten in den Allmandring 8a oder in die Heilmannstraße 4B kommen.

I want to connect more than one device. How can I do that?

  • To do that you can either use a simple network switch or a router.
  • A network switch is the cheaper option and is a lot easier to use because you just have to plug it in.
  • A router has to be configured before you can use it. A "Router HowTo" can be found on our website.
  • If you need additional assistance you are welcome to visit one of our office hours with your devices (router, laptop, ...). It is also recommended to visit either Allmandring 8a or Heilmannstraße 4B if you need technical assistance.

In meinem Zimmer gibt es aber keine Netzwerkdose!

  • In jedem von uns betreuten Wohnheim gibt es in jedem Zimmer eine Netzwerkdose!
  • In manchen Zimmern ist die Netzwerkdose nicht unter dem Schreibtisch, sondern hinter einem Schrank oder Regal zu finden. (Und nein: Wir wissen nicht, warum das so ist.)

But there is no network outlet in my room!

  • In every dormitory there is one network outlet in every room!
  • In some rooms, however, (for reasons unknown to us) the network outlet is behind a shelf or cupboard. Just search for it and you will find it.

Mögliche Problemquellen

  • Ist dein Computer so eingestellt, dass er automatisch eine IP Adresse (per DHCP) bezieht?
  • Hast du überprüft ob alle Netzwerkkabel richtig stecken? Auf beiden Seiten des Kabels?
  • Hast alle deine Geräte schon neu gestartet?
  • Ist deine Netzwerkkarte defekt oder nicht richtig aktiviert?
  • Bei Doppelnetzwerkdosen: Steckt das Netzwerkkabel am richtigen Anschluss? Im Zweifelsfall ausprobieren!

Problem sources

  • Is your computer configured to automatically (DHCP) receive an IP address from the network?
  • Did you check if all cables are properly attached? On both ends?
  • Did you already reboot/restart your device?
  • PC network interface damaged or deactivated?
  • With dual network outlets: Is the network cable plugged into the correct connector? If in doubt just try the other one!
